“I don’t want another night like that again,” Jenny said when I joined her in the kitchen for breakfast. There were large dark circles under her eyes and it reminded me that I must look just as haggard.

“He doesn’t seem too much the worse for wear; I’ve just come from seeing him now.”

“I suppose that’s the main thing. Can’t say it didn’t give me a fright, though.”

A long silence passed while we both considered what had happened, until a tap on the glass jolted us from our introspection. Willa’s grinning face was at the kitchen door and I looked at her stupidly for a moment before gathering my wits.

“Who’s that?” Jenny said, her face brightening with curiosity.

“It’s my sister, let me deal with her.”
